Digifest

Digifest is an annually reoccurring event that brings together Digital Media seniors at the University of Houston. They are brought together to display their works to show their potential and network with potential employers. With the best works displayed, the event gives awareness to what some graduates’ capabilities are and even provides job opportunities. The event is held in the spring and is vital to new Digital Media graduates as it ultimately gives them a platform and presence.

While working on the Digifest graphics, I decided to focus on the idea of connection and linking with each other. I wanted to make that the most relevant theme in Digifest because that is essentially what it was. I had some difficulty finding ways to make the idea of connection clear and what to represent it. I did not want to represent Digital Media as the general objects such as the camera or computers, so I had to think of a way to describe digital media more abstractly. I then chose a color theme that popped out the most because of the contrast and chose red and black as the primary colors. The tricky part for me was finding the color combinations that worked well to help convey how bold and refined the Digital Media program is.

From these ideas, I decided to use lines to represent connections and linking together. I also colored the lines red to represent the University of Houston students as our primary color representation is red. I still think I found it difficult to express it with mydesign, but it still could convey the idea of linking and connecting as thelines meet. I didn’t want to downplay the viewers and beat them on the head by making it clear that my graphics represent networking and connections as it becomes too cheesy. I then discovered the importance of contrast as my graphics revolved around heavy contrast with the background, and I thought it was veryeffective. I felt that the use of bold contrast also would represent the boldness of the program and give the graphics a sense of sophistication. I also tried to make the elements interact to provide an understanding of being tied together, and each piece is connected to everything in one way or another. I used the object blend in illustrator to make the lines and blend them with each other using the chocolate color and the darker red of the University of Houston's colors. I also used the cream color to offset the contrast to give balance to the red besides the black.
