Design Culture Now

Design Culture Now is a event that is held at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, annually, in New York and is a category in the National Design Triennial which is an exhibit that showcases the best products, graphics, and architectural designs. The event brings awareness to various contemporary designs by various artists and highlights artists as speakers at each held event.

For the project I really wanted to emphasize the name of the event as it is a very significant part of the whole event. I tried to give the title a techie feel and bring a futuristic sensation in. As design is always ever changing, everyone’s interpretation is always different Trying the find more information about the event was quite a struggle even though the event is well known. Although the event is an annual occurrence, I struggled to find more information about the event that makes it clear as to what it is. There isn’t enough representation of the event as an actual event but more so represented as an assignment. Although the event is widely known as a poster assignment, I think that it still very relevant to the event as it does bring attention to the various ideas of how design culture now should be represented.

The design choices that I made for the header were to create jagged edges to give a techie feel and a more modern effect. The use of San serifs greatly compliments the way that the lettering was cut. As for the imagery I had first went with an obviously tech theme but with guidance and feedback, I have decided to hint the tech theme abstractly and subtly with my various use of lines.

I really feel the need that design culture should be emphasized and I hope to do so with my iteration of the poster for the event. Design is always and will forever be enticing to everyone regardless of background or age. Design has always existed and giving it recognition even though it’s a part of our daily lives its always great to take a step back and recognize what is so complex and deeply ingrained in society.
